ONION EATING ?CONTEST?

HOW THIS WORKS

• A challenge has been laid out: can you or can you not eat a raw onion like an apple?


• Zinnia has obtained about $20 worth of onions from the grocery store because... why not.


• Sophomores only, sorry! Upperclassmen can react but cannot compete. Zinnia's not sharing her onions with you.


• Fill out the form below and post it to ONIONS to see how much your sophomore can stomach.

Neal shakes his head, stubborn. "If they're not in danger and no one's upset then it's just part of being a teenager, right?"

He starts to walk, unable to stand still, but just circles around Atticus. A restless would-be predator, but with his claws sheathed. "If I stopped them, they'd only learn that I wasn't fun. Not that eating until you're sick is bad."

Atticus watches Neal as he starts to move, but quickly switches his attention to his own hands when it becomes clear Neal's just pacing. It makes him a little uncomfortable, like Pearl's constant fidgeting. It makes him feel restless, too. But he stays still.

"Maybe the heartburn will teach them that," he says, but he doesn't sound hopeful.

Neal doesn't stop pacing, but he does find a surviving onion. When he comes back into Atticus' view he's sniffing it. The curiosity on his face is obvious. "What do you think they'll do next? They're going to escalate."

"Don't eat that," Atticus says instead of replying to him, because he knows that look.

Neal stops, looks Atticus directly in the eye, and takes a bite.

"Neal," Atticus says, neither surprised nor disappointed exactly. Why is he like this? "Are you pleased with yourself?" He hopes the answer is no, against all odds.

Neal chews very deliberately, committed to this decision even as his nose and mouth are filled with strong, spicy flavor. If it were someone besides Atticus, they might mistake his carefully composed expression for being very pleased indeed. But there's a twinge in his eyes, betraying the faintest hint of regret.

Neal swallows, and dabs his watering eyes on his sleeve casually. "Yes."

"Are you going to stop eating the onion now?" he asks. It'd be easy to mistake it for a genuine question and not the gentle egging on that it is. If Neal wants to ignore his good advice and eat onions, that's Neal's problem.

Neal's smile takes on an especially fake quality. For a moment he considers letting the joke go, but he can't. Especially not when it's Atticus, although he'd rather not examine why that matters.

"Why would I?" Neal takes a second bite, and it's just as unpleasant as the first. Chew, chew, chew... swallow. "It's really not that bad." His stomach's already a little upset as he holds out the onion to Atticus. "Try it."

Atticus has been trying to hold a straight face through all of this, but breaks and laughs when Neal offers him the onion. He could take it and just throw it away and spare Neal some digestive hardship, but where's the fun in that?

"No thanks," he says instead, much in the same time he turns down drinks at parties.
