VALENTINE'S DAY DANCE

The red carpet has been rolled out at Finchwood, and the decor does its best to distract you from the fact that this is still taking place in the gym. Banners proclaim that this is the Oscars ceremony, and for the first part of the dance freshmen mob the red carpet. [Character A] answers the freshman reporter's questions with grace as camera flashes go off in the background. [Character B] on the other hand says or does something terribly embarrassing by accident, which a freshman paparazzi catches on camera.

Inside there are elegant tables to the left, a dance floor and stage to the right. Once everyone is settled, Venus Rosales and Neal Valentine take the stage as the hosts of tonight's award ceremony! They give a banter-filled speech about how the night will go, and wish all these talented actors and actresses luck! Thalia Mitchell (and their band/partner if applicable) gets the night started with a cover of a Hollywood classic, and now it's time to party!

Throughout the night, Sabrina Lane is continuously assailed by paparazzi freshman who didn't get the memo that they only had to play this part for the first few minutes. Meanwhile [Character E] visits the refreshments table where Rose Chapman is "bartending", whether or not they have clearance. The drink they make is... suspect. Gross.

After the awards are given out, students file out of the gym in their fancy dress. The night is cold but clear, and the stars overhead are bright. Their lives might be complicated, but tonight was very silly and simple.

HOW THIS WORKS

  • The theme of the dance is old Hollywood glamour! The dance begins at 7:00 PM and ends at 11:30 PM. Then everyone must return to their dorms.

  • At the end of the night, some students will be awarded Oscars if they pose for photos! The categories are: Best actress, best supporting actress, best actor, and best supporting actor! These will be chosen via RNG. Just make sure you reply to the Nominee Photo Op header to qualify! ♥ (You must have replied to this header by Monday, February 18th at 11:59pm CST.)

  • There is a "bar" where student council members and volunteers are making mocktails for the guests. While none of it is alcoholic, the drinks are served in cute glasses with convinging garnishes. The menu is:
  • All night, the music played is from Hollywood's golden age, and the lighting is dim and romantic. A plush red carpet leads to the stage, and the dance floor around it is mellow and romantic.

  • One corner of the dance has a projector set up as a tiny theater, with chairs set up in rows. On the projector, movies like Casablanca, Breakfast at Tiffany's and Singin' In The Rain are being screened.

» Before the Dance: It's time to get ready! Be sure you look your most glam for the red carpet.

» The Red Carpet: Students arriving at the dance must walk down a red carpet, lined with freshmen asking them questions about their relationship and taking tons of photos. Awkward!

» The Bar: Just inside and to the left, there's the reprieve of a bar and table. Sadly, no real alcohol is being served, unless you slipped a flask in to spike your mocktail.

» The Dance Floor: Classic romantic songs play through the speakers tonight. It's not a very up-tempo dance, but it sure is classy.

» Movie Screening: Would you rather enjoy a Casablanca than cut a rug? This tiny makeshift theater is for you. The movies are being projected on a white sheet, and chairs have been arranged in front of it.

» Nominee Photo Op: Anyone who poses for a photo on stage, be it alone, with their date or in a group, could win an award tonight!

» Awards: And the Oscar goes to...

» Around Campus: Some people have decided to opt out of the dance, so they're free to enjoy the quieter-than-usual campus.

» The end of the night: It's been a long, fun night, but it's time to rest.

"Oh well," Lucy whispers back, impish. "I was going to keep you anyway."

Greedy. Well, she's never denied it. And reality keeps enabling her, so who's really to blame?

The sounds of people passing grow thicker. A group roots itself nearby, chattering and laughing about someone's failed, fireless date, but Lucy's too distracted with propping herself up against Dustin to listen for the painful details. She slides sharp hips against his, draws the still-cold fingers of one hand along his chest. They playfully circle his neck before sliding behind it, looping her arm around to pull in closer.

The other hand attempts -- perhaps not so sneakily, because she's smiling like something is funny when she moves to kiss him -- to slip an envelope from the pocket of her jacket to his.

Dustin lifts his hand to Lucy's face as he returns the kiss. The movement exposes his jacket pocket nicely. He'll look at the envelope later. Despite recent evidence to the contrary, he still holds a healthy respect for delayed gratification.

There's a moment of silence, touching. Dustin pushes a strand of Lucy's hair behind her ear.

"Do you want to shovel snow tomorrow?" He then asks, completely ruining the mood.

Despite the safe passage of her gift, Lucy looks, just for a moment, like she might want to wrap her hand around Dustin's throat again. But there's love in the expression.

"Mmm, no," she simpers, as if it were a sugary yes, and playfully shakes her head to free what has just been tucked neatly away. "Even you can't make me do good, do-gooder."

Lucy turns her face into Dustin's hand, nipping at the soft part of his thumb. Then she shifts her gaze forward again, carefully, as if suspicious of her own desire to remain like this: leaning into his fingers like a tamed animal. It occurs to her that it is, unfortunately ... sweet that he would try to include her in what is almost certainly a Community Outreach activity, even if it is a Community Outreach activity. Outside in the freezing cold. For no purpose other than to be helpful.

"I can't anyway," she concedes, in recognition of this. One offering for another. "I'm practicing with Pearl."

"You do good," he says, even as he watches her reassert her preference for freedom and disarray. He doesn't mean to put her in a box, but to leave the point feels perilously close to lying and he's spent all his thou shalt nots for the night. It's annoying of him, he knows. He'll leave it be, if she wants.

Lucy bites his thumb. He bites his lip. Tries to think about snow.

"Oh. Say hi from me," Dustin replies, on autopilot now and set to polite.

Lucy's heart pulses a stupid, thornless little kick, which is more irritating than anything Dustin could ever say or do. She doesn't respond in words, but tilts her lips back to that bitten spot and soothes a kiss against it.

"That might be dangerous," Lucy reminds him grudgingly, closing her eyes. It's true. Pearl is a sunbeam and they are standing in shadow. She doesn't want to think about any of it right now, but can't bring herself to joke, distract herself with pushing boundaries. Instead, before she can reconsider the action, Lucy does something she's never done before: she slings her other arm up around his neck, and, rather than dragging him into a kiss, rests her head against his heart. Her body presses into his with no urgency. Just warmth.

"Don't say anything," she grumbles. Don't say anything nice.

Dustin opens his mouth to reply, then smiles and closes it again. Maybe Lucy can feel the quiet rumble of laughter in his chest. Or maybe not; he's never been sure how easy he is to read.

He pulls her in a tiny bit tighter. His chin rests on the top of her head. It tilts his eyes up, but there's nothing to look at in the dark.

There's something comfortable about it, for Dustin. Just standing in this little space. It's another one of those moments where the world outside seems to drop away and it's enough enough to convince him that this isn't the time to worry about dangerous things. Tomorrow, he knows, will be anxious for itself. "Ah, well," he eventually says on a sigh. "The future's no one's affair."
