VALENTINE'S DAY DANCE

The red carpet has been rolled out at Finchwood, and the decor does its best to distract you from the fact that this is still taking place in the gym. Banners proclaim that this is the Oscars ceremony, and for the first part of the dance freshmen mob the red carpet. [Character A] answers the freshman reporter's questions with grace as camera flashes go off in the background. [Character B] on the other hand says or does something terribly embarrassing by accident, which a freshman paparazzi catches on camera.

Inside there are elegant tables to the left, a dance floor and stage to the right. Once everyone is settled, Venus Rosales and Neal Valentine take the stage as the hosts of tonight's award ceremony! They give a banter-filled speech about how the night will go, and wish all these talented actors and actresses luck! Thalia Mitchell (and their band/partner if applicable) gets the night started with a cover of a Hollywood classic, and now it's time to party!

Throughout the night, Sabrina Lane is continuously assailed by paparazzi freshman who didn't get the memo that they only had to play this part for the first few minutes. Meanwhile [Character E] visits the refreshments table where Rose Chapman is "bartending", whether or not they have clearance. The drink they make is... suspect. Gross.

After the awards are given out, students file out of the gym in their fancy dress. The night is cold but clear, and the stars overhead are bright. Their lives might be complicated, but tonight was very silly and simple.

HOW THIS WORKS

  • The theme of the dance is old Hollywood glamour! The dance begins at 7:00 PM and ends at 11:30 PM. Then everyone must return to their dorms.

  • At the end of the night, some students will be awarded Oscars if they pose for photos! The categories are: Best actress, best supporting actress, best actor, and best supporting actor! These will be chosen via RNG. Just make sure you reply to the Nominee Photo Op header to qualify! ♥ (You must have replied to this header by Monday, February 18th at 11:59pm CST.)

  • There is a "bar" where student council members and volunteers are making mocktails for the guests. While none of it is alcoholic, the drinks are served in cute glasses with convinging garnishes. The menu is:
  • All night, the music played is from Hollywood's golden age, and the lighting is dim and romantic. A plush red carpet leads to the stage, and the dance floor around it is mellow and romantic.

  • One corner of the dance has a projector set up as a tiny theater, with chairs set up in rows. On the projector, movies like Casablanca, Breakfast at Tiffany's and Singin' In The Rain are being screened.

» Before the Dance: It's time to get ready! Be sure you look your most glam for the red carpet.

» The Red Carpet: Students arriving at the dance must walk down a red carpet, lined with freshmen asking them questions about their relationship and taking tons of photos. Awkward!

» The Bar: Just inside and to the left, there's the reprieve of a bar and table. Sadly, no real alcohol is being served, unless you slipped a flask in to spike your mocktail.

» The Dance Floor: Classic romantic songs play through the speakers tonight. It's not a very up-tempo dance, but it sure is classy.

» Movie Screening: Would you rather enjoy a Casablanca than cut a rug? This tiny makeshift theater is for you. The movies are being projected on a white sheet, and chairs have been arranged in front of it.

» Nominee Photo Op: Anyone who poses for a photo on stage, be it alone, with their date or in a group, could win an award tonight!

» Awards: And the Oscar goes to...

» Around Campus: Some people have decided to opt out of the dance, so they're free to enjoy the quieter-than-usual campus.

» The end of the night: It's been a long, fun night, but it's time to rest.

Jude & Sully

Jude's eyes flick over to Sully, trying to analyze if the sentiment is real or not. Sully says a lot of things that Jude doesn't believe, and this is one of them. He's only interesting to Sully because he's difficult, but if he were too difficult, Sully would move on. He doesn't want to think about why he keeps baiting that hook, keeping Sully just interested enough.

"You could have found someone else to entertain you," Jude suggests coldly, but sips the drink he was given. He doesn't move, still as ice even as Sullivan tests their boundaries.

"But you're so fascinating." Sully objects. And it's teasing, yes - always playful. Always straddling that line between sincere and overwrought; because being blurry is safe when you, yourself, are unsure of your own feelings. But, Jude is all stillness, sharp angles and overwhelming quiet. And that is fascinating to someone who is nothing but movement and sound.

Sully raises his glass - a Cupid's Kiss - to his lips, but pauses. He gestures at the screen, but keeps his eyes on Jude. "You a fan of the silver screen stuff, Jude Tobin?" The question posed, Sully takes a drink.

But you're so fascinating. Jude huffs and looks at anything that isn't Sully. He's staring at the characters projected in front of them, but not paying any attention whatever romantic hijinks they're involved in.

Jude also takes a drink, to give himself a moment to consider. "Sure. As much as anyone does. Although sometimes we revere the 'classics'," the quotes are practically audible, "due to familiarity more than anything else. The mere-exposure effect."

And then just as he thinks Sully might say something, he cuts him short: "I actually prefer the theater. Even more pretentious, I know."

Jude starts off on a rant and Sully leans in, engaged with it; he's almost sad that it ends so quickly. It's charming, and Sully would have no problem admitting he finds it so (as long as he couched it, of course). The way Jude seems to feel so intensely about so many things is something else. To Sully, who generally experiences emotions the way a bug scoots across the surface of water, it's- well, it's what he's already called it: fascinating.

He goes to make a comment about the mere-exposure effect. He wants to ask if that'll work on Jude, or if it'll just be a case of familiarity breeding (more) contempt. But Jude stops him before he's even opened his mouth, and the subject's changed.

"Ah," he waves his hand dismissively. Sully's been in drama for four years. He loves theater. He's probably one of the least refined and cultured people he knows. "You're fine. That doesn't have to be pretentious. Willy Shakes was writing for-the-people kinda stuff, right?"

Jude is too slow to stop himself. He's already exposed too much to Sullivan, who is such an immediate threat that he's not sure why he's revealing even these superficial details to him. He's not used to admitting he likes anything. His tastes, his hobbies, the things that might actually make him happy. Talking to Sully feels like throwing his diary into a fire.

"He's my favorite writer. William Shakespeare." He hates the sound of his own voice, hushed and secretive. It's no secret. He has mugs, journals and shirts emblazoned with Shakespeare quotes. It's just that he doesn't discuss it. "Cliche. Maybe it's the mere-exposure effect."

"Pretty sure the ol'Prince of Denmark would have something to say about that," Sully replies, ticking a finger forward, then tapping his hand against his lips, trying to recall the line he's thinking of. Shakespeare's not his wheelhouse, really, but you encounter it a lot when you're a high school student taking English and Theater.

"There's nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it?" He's not sure if that's the exact quote, but it sounds right. "Dude, don't worry too much about it being cliche. If it makes you happy...ehm." Sully gives a lazy shrug, the universal sign for 'if it feels good, do it.' His smile, which he'd done such a good job of keeping even and non-threatening, then cracks into a far more terrible grin. "Or maybe you being susceptible to the mere-exposure effect is good news for me."

He wiggles his eyebrows.
