VALENTINE'S DAY DANCE

The red carpet has been rolled out at Finchwood, and the decor does its best to distract you from the fact that this is still taking place in the gym. Banners proclaim that this is the Oscars ceremony, and for the first part of the dance freshmen mob the red carpet. [Character A] answers the freshman reporter's questions with grace as camera flashes go off in the background. [Character B] on the other hand says or does something terribly embarrassing by accident, which a freshman paparazzi catches on camera.

Inside there are elegant tables to the left, a dance floor and stage to the right. Once everyone is settled, Venus Rosales and Neal Valentine take the stage as the hosts of tonight's award ceremony! They give a banter-filled speech about how the night will go, and wish all these talented actors and actresses luck! Thalia Mitchell (and their band/partner if applicable) gets the night started with a cover of a Hollywood classic, and now it's time to party!

Throughout the night, Sabrina Lane is continuously assailed by paparazzi freshman who didn't get the memo that they only had to play this part for the first few minutes. Meanwhile [Character E] visits the refreshments table where Rose Chapman is "bartending", whether or not they have clearance. The drink they make is... suspect. Gross.

After the awards are given out, students file out of the gym in their fancy dress. The night is cold but clear, and the stars overhead are bright. Their lives might be complicated, but tonight was very silly and simple.

HOW THIS WORKS

  • The theme of the dance is old Hollywood glamour! The dance begins at 7:00 PM and ends at 11:30 PM. Then everyone must return to their dorms.

  • At the end of the night, some students will be awarded Oscars if they pose for photos! The categories are: Best actress, best supporting actress, best actor, and best supporting actor! These will be chosen via RNG. Just make sure you reply to the Nominee Photo Op header to qualify! ♥ (You must have replied to this header by Monday, February 18th at 11:59pm CST.)

  • There is a "bar" where student council members and volunteers are making mocktails for the guests. While none of it is alcoholic, the drinks are served in cute glasses with convinging garnishes. The menu is:
  • All night, the music played is from Hollywood's golden age, and the lighting is dim and romantic. A plush red carpet leads to the stage, and the dance floor around it is mellow and romantic.

  • One corner of the dance has a projector set up as a tiny theater, with chairs set up in rows. On the projector, movies like Casablanca, Breakfast at Tiffany's and Singin' In The Rain are being screened.

» Before the Dance: It's time to get ready! Be sure you look your most glam for the red carpet.

» The Red Carpet: Students arriving at the dance must walk down a red carpet, lined with freshmen asking them questions about their relationship and taking tons of photos. Awkward!

» The Bar: Just inside and to the left, there's the reprieve of a bar and table. Sadly, no real alcohol is being served, unless you slipped a flask in to spike your mocktail.

» The Dance Floor: Classic romantic songs play through the speakers tonight. It's not a very up-tempo dance, but it sure is classy.

» Movie Screening: Would you rather enjoy a Casablanca than cut a rug? This tiny makeshift theater is for you. The movies are being projected on a white sheet, and chairs have been arranged in front of it.

» Nominee Photo Op: Anyone who poses for a photo on stage, be it alone, with their date or in a group, could win an award tonight!

» Awards: And the Oscar goes to...

» Around Campus: Some people have decided to opt out of the dance, so they're free to enjoy the quieter-than-usual campus.

» The end of the night: It's been a long, fun night, but it's time to rest.

Roland, himself, may have more of a Bruce Willis Can't Be Killed thing going on, in general, but he can dig the Old Hollywood feel of this dance, even if he doesn't quite look the part. That's what he grew up with, after all - Grandma loved to throw on stuff like Singin' In The Rain and talk through Bing or Gene or Fred standing at bars looking serious and manful. Or something.

Roland's leaning against the bar, holding a martini glass with chocolate milk in it. He does not feel serious or manful. But he does feel extremely nervous. Maybe he should go watch a movie.

Justice also has a martini glass, but hers is full of tiny balls of sorbet, because she bullied a freshman into giving her a bunch of just that without any sprite. She's currently eating them with her fingers as quickly as possible, but they melting is inevitable.

"Do you think they'll give me a spoon?" Justice wonders aloud to Roland, because she doesn't wait to wait for it melt all the way to drink it.

Roland watches Justice eat a few pieces of sorbet before responding. Gosh, he should've thought to ask for that. No wonder Justice is a squad leader.

"Wipe your hand off on them when you ask," he suggests. "Probably get a quick positive response that way."

Ha, good idea. "Well I can't wipe it on my sweater," she says, licking her fingers clean. "It's cashmere." Cashmere blend, anyway. It's nicer than ninety percent of the sweaters she owns, and she will probably definitely get sorbet on it tonight.

"Where's your date?" she asks. She saw the matchmaking list. She knows the gossip.

Roland glances out over the crowd. "Birthday partying, I think." He pauses. Doesn't much care for talking about his consistent failure to talk - makes it even harder to do any talking at all. "Didn't speak to him much, though, anyway. Wasn't sure if the list made the date official or not." A small smile crosses his face and he nods at Justice. "You could try eating the rest of them at once. Handle the brain freeze?"

Lyle doesn't look old Hollywood. Lyle looks like the intern who wants to be an extra and somehow stole a beefy star's clothing. His shirt is two sizes too big, as most of his clothes are, and he definitely isn't wearing a tie or jacket. The top button's undone because Lyle doesn't like top buttons. It's not very formal, all in all, though his shoes are the shiniest they've ever been. He's here with Sully, which is fun, but Sully has a lot of friends. Obligations. He understands.

Lyle slips next to his roommate in one of those moments, tapping the bar twice, dramatic as the night demands. "I say." He says, in the nasally old-time movie star voice that he can't really do. "What kinda gin joint doesn't even have gin?" (He doesn't drink gin.) (Hi, Roland.)

"One that's a front for something else," Roland replies without missing a beat, kind of going for Humphrey Bogart and ... not really even coming close to nailing it. The subtle smile on his face doesn't help things much, either. Oh well, he's laying groundwork for a bigger plot, here. And it's fun. Even if he can't always keep up with it as much as he'd like, Lyle's imagination is a comfortable distraction for Roland.

But, isn't Lyle here with someone? (Isn't Roland here with someone? God. Social thingies suck.) "You lose your arm candy?"

His eyebrow ticks up, a grin struggling at the corner of his mouth. It should stay down, but Lyle's always delighted when someone plays with him in any capacity. Roland's probably too easy a mark. He's used to this by now. It's still fun.

"A front, you say? For what, I wonder." He ponders, spinning so that he's facing Roland, but his elbows are on the bar. Only when he's pondered through about a dozen fun theories does he hear the next question. Lyle seems to snap back to reality, as much as he ever can.

"Sully? He's..." He looks, and isn't concerned that the other boy is nowhere near. "Oh, doing a heist, probably." He waves an airy hand. "Where's yours?"

Roland snorts, one brow ticking up high. But Lyle doesn't seem too pressed about it, so he shouldn't either. As for his date? "Uh," Roland scans the dance floor. He's not even sure if he's here with Luke. Engaging people he doesn't normally engage with is hard. He knows it's Luke's birthday, at least, so he must be, "Celebrating."

He turns his gaze back to Lyle. He presses his lips into a flat line, a moment of thought before suggesting, "Or maybe they're both in on whatever's going on here."

Lyle grows instantly more engaged, running a faux-concerned hand through his hair. "My God." He intones. Really, he should be more concerned that Roland was having a nice time with a cute boy and interfere, but Lyle has never once sacrificed a good story line for real world problems.

"A bar without alcohol, missing dates." He confides at a whisper, "Strange but moral. Maybe it's a cult. Maybe it's human sacrifice and the only liquor they can drink is our blood."

It's not.

"Vampire den?" Ro asks, doing his best to sound like he doesn't believe it. I mean, he doesn't. But he's going less for 'that's weird' and more 'skeptical companion to be proven wrong later,' because that's what the role calls for. And he's never shied away from engaging Lyle's personal brand of eccentricity - it's fun.

He tries not to grin too much - which isn't really hard, Roland is not a terribly emotive person - when he says, "We may have to bust it up."

Fiction has a way of piercing through whatever thoughts Lyle's having ordinarily, and he takes people near him on journeys through it, whether they like it or have asked for it, or not. Now, there's a flash behind his eyes, and a bad vampire show takes up residence in his head. A glamorous Hollywood setting with someone a lot like Roland as the lead; strong and silent and staking his way through the undead with clever quips and no smiles. It's probably been done, but still fun to think about.

"There's not enough of us." He presses. "Who knows how many of them are in on it. And I left my holy water at home, tonight."

"I'm not afraid." he says. That's the big hero line, isn't it? Roland takes a sip from his martini glass and - oh, right, it's chocolate milk. For a moment, it puts him out of his own head, and he snickers into the glass. The faint crinkle of laughter hangs in his voice as he goes on, "We'll just have to be sneaky."

Roland leans his elbows on the bar and looks out at the students dancing. He likes the way Lyle tells stories. The way they blur into reality like watercolors dripping onto a white sheet of paper. He's not sure how to express that. So, he plays along, instead. "Who's the least likely to be one of them? Maybe we can recruit."

It is the big hero line, and Lyle smiles, appreciating him quite a lot for using it now. He makes to tilt his glass against the chocolate one, and then he remembers he'd forgotten to order a drink. Hmm. Oh well. "You're not scared of anything, damn you."
He sighs, and makes a show of even ordering a Casablanca from the bar. The freshman looks at him kind of strangely. It isn't the first time.

He sips for a moment, and it's fizzy, which is as much as he can hope for from a drink. Lyle considers.

"We see Henry all the time. He can't be hiding anything. Unless." He peers up over the rim of his cup, and now it's his turn to almost laugh. "That's exactly what he wants us to think."

Roland's no actor, and his grin cracks a little, watching Lyle order his drink. It's all sort of down hill from there. "A plant." he mumbles, heavy with overdone disappointment, trying not to laugh. He lifts his brow in sudden epiphany. "What if his accent's been fake this whole time?"

"You know what we have to do. To really find out." Lyle muses, eyes twinkling because it's really not a good idea, "Get him drunk so he reveals his real one. No man can hide behind liquor." He swishes his ginger ale and pear juice around, like he's being philosophical at all. "I'd like to trust him. There's so few we can."

"Room party." Roland concludes with as much enthusiasm as he's like to muster, tipping his glass in Lyle's direction. A teenage boy in an elaborate Classic Hollywood vampire-spy-noir role-play is still a teenage boy. The prospect of playing a drinking game with his friends is almost more appealing than standing around awkwardly at a dance. Almost. He's having fun with Lyle. "We can loop the girls in. Bet Rose isn't a vampire." A pause. "And Josie?" He isn't sure if Josie is interested in those sorts of shenanigans.
