CARDBOARD BOBSLED

What the hell is going on with the western stairwell in the dorms? Someone's turned it into a cardboard-and-pillow-lined luge track. The whole thing! Floor five to ground level. It's pretty well decorated, all things considered, with whimsical plastic toys and paper cut outs stuck to the walls or dangling from the ceiling. There are even fairy lights scotch taped to the walls. It's like if you turned a Joe's Crab Shack into the world's jankiest amusement park ride. The culprit figures that if he gets in trouble he can just blame it on the sudden snow and his slow descent into madness. YOLO, etc.

Our adventure starts on the top floor, the Swords dorm and carries talented riders down and around up to five floors of spiral staircase. Freshmen stand at each door, watching to ensure no one's loitering on the track. Different music thrums through at each dorm floor landing from portable speakers manned by freshmen, adding even more confusion to the quick trip down the stairs. And on the ground level, a table with some snacks and drinks has been set out. Shitty medals made of folded paper and yarn are being awarded for those who “go all the way.”

HOW THIS WORKS

• With the assistance of some freshmen, Liam Blumenthal has assembled a cardboard sledding track in the western stairwell of the dorms. It took him most of the afternoon, so the first rides are available in the evening.


• Since the western stairwell is in use, he asks that the eastern stairwell and elevator not be loitered in. For safety reasons. :)


• Pick your mode of transport and go for a ride! You have a few options:
  • Ya Butt (-10 to rolls, +1 to butt pain)
  • Lumpy Pillow (-5 to rolls, +5 to comfort)
  • Laundry Basket (0 to rolls, the Civic of improv indoor sleds)
  • Plastic Disc Sled (+5 to rolls, +5 to style)
  • One of those wheeled gym class ridey board things (+10 to rolls, +15 to yolo, but 50% chance of wipe out)

• Assume light scrapes, maybe a bruise, at worst for injury. Everything is lined with pillows and cardboard. It's quite squishy.


• This is super low pressure. Just something dumb and fun.

Liam (Open++)

Behind the snack table, Liam's tucked himself into a large laundry basket lined with spare pillows. His strange throne. It emphasizes the too longness of his limbs; he's all elbows and knees jutting everywhere, spiderish. Drained and drowsy, the dark circles under his eyes are stark this evening. But still he busies himself with sorting through construction paper medals, occasionally pausing to refold something or correct a misspelling or grammar mistake with a put upon sigh. His pen marks make the already ridiculous keepsakes look even sillier.

From time to time, his pen slows, leaving a blotch or a long meandering red squiggle, like he's dozing off as he works.

Eva sees no reason to get out of her laundry cage. Legs draped over one side of her plastic vehicle, second basket hanging on her head like she's headed to the Met Gala and the theme is Charlie's Mother from Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, she scoots her way under the snack table toward Liam.

"Oh my god," she says with a heavy sigh, poking him with her foot. "I can't believe we wore the same dress."

"Girl, you know I post about my outfits on IG before all big events." (He doesn't, actually.) Liam's voice has the grainy sound of someone who is living on coffee and a prayer, but he grins at her all the same, a heavy-lidded smile. He nudges her back with his own converse-clad foot. The laces are untied. "No excuse."

"Pfffffft, please, who uses the 'Grams these days?" Eva scoffs, as if she wasn't just refreshing her feeds seconds before boot-scooting over here. "IG died with the fidget spinner, it's all metaphysics and Twitter-fridges now."

She pauses, lips pressed together, for like a full half a second. Look, it's definitely fun to throw yourself down five flights of stairs for ostensibly no reason, but you know what else is fun? Responsible friending.

"You look heckin' baked chief. You need someone to pull you out the oven?" A coherent sentence, for sure.

"I'm thriving." Liam says. His battle cry. He's wearing two pairs of glasses and there's a red ink smudge on his cheek. He ticks his pen out toward Eva, like he's just had an epiphany. The pen cap goes flying over her shoulder and hits a freshman in the head. "But I do need a nicer fridge apparently. Being a cool teen is so hard."

He rests there, mouth hanging open just a bit. It's possible his battery's finally run out and he'll need some new duracels before he'll generate any new grumbled quips. But, oh, no, wait. There he goes again. "I dozed off for like seven minutes last night and had a dream where an octopus told me that in trying times, when shit's... scary...I could help people by giving them a way to blow off steam." Like Moses and his burning bush. Or is it Noah and the ark? Shit. Sleep more, Blumenthal. A pause, Liam immediately realizes how fucking crazy he sounds. He's going to roll with it. "Hence, uh, this."
