Gregory Serenades a Petulant Child

“Maybe so,” Cecilia responds dispassionately. She is unmoved by Gregory’s hand on her shoulder or the single tear running down his cheek. He isn’t in control of his actions. She supposes no one ever really is, at the molecular level. And if you’re not in control of your actions than you can’t be in control of your fate. And nothing you do really matters at all. So, what’s the point in worrying?

...

But worry she does, anyway. All the time. Cecilia hasn’t quite hammered out the details of her new life philosophy.

Pulling her knees to her chest, she tips her head back against the wall and sighs. “Is it fun to be charmed? You seem...” Manic. “Overjoyed.” Maybe she should try it.

Cecilia's response -- her words, her tone, her physicality -- make Gregory frown in an exaggerated manner. It's almost pouty. Why won't she be happy with him? The effect of being charmed is powerful though, and it pulls at the corners of his mouth, giving him a sinusoidal expression.

"It is fun!" he exclaims, and the smile finally defeats the frown. "The shadow post read my mind. I was the one who thought they wanted to be charmed. And then I was." Gregory's eyes go wide, his whole face expanding with the growing idea in his head. "You should wish for something, and then the Shadow Post can read your mind, and then it might come true!" He's a genius.
