While Exploration is taking place, garment boxes are left for the members of Squad 2. Sitting on top of each box is a leather tricorne hat. If that's not enough for you to guess who sent this, the box also contains a pirate coat and handwritten notecard from Noah:

Captain Dustin Espinosa

He may seem like a wildcard, but this is the crew's most seasoned sailor, born to salt air and harsh waters. His haunted eyes remember how his former crew was all captured and executed. He owes a life debt to Captain Espinosa for sparing his life, and hates it.

Dallas the Defiant

Unjustly sentenced to 7 years transportation, this brash youth fled escaped both death and hard labor when he was taken by a pirate ship and told to prove himself. He dueled five crewmen, all bigger and more well-fed than him, and beat them all.

Left in front of the Sophomore Coins Girls dorm:

Bloody Bloom aka Zinnia the Red

No man here dares to claim that having a woman on board is bad luck, not after having seen this flame-haired hellion armed only with a shovel and a bad attitude. No one knows where she came from, and she'll verbally eviscerate anyone who asks.

Left in front of the Senior Coins Girls dorm:

Navigator Lucille Simon

This woman of letters (and some say, witch) was born to high society. But she rejected a confining station and unsuitable marriage, and set sail with those who recognized her many gifts... and wouldn't shun her for her interest in more esoteric treasures.

Flat | Top-Level Comments Only

Dustin knows this is from Noah. He knows. He knows. It doesn't stop him from looking around to see if maybe this is meant for Eli or Wallace or anyone else. It's not every day that costumes end up on his doorstep.

He should ward his team, he thinks, as he carefully refolds the coat and sets it gently back in its box. This isn't a movie set. Exploration isn't the time for play-acting, isn't a game. It's serious, life or death, and it deserves to be treated as such. He can't encourage something like this; it wouldn't be appropriate. Wouldn't be right.

His hand drifts over one of the bright gold buttons and he rubs at it absently with his thumb. The coat is actually sort of... incredible; how much had Noah paid for this? Too much, he's sure, for something so ridiculous — and then as soon as he thinks it, he wonders why he expected anything less.

The little story thing Noah included makes him sound dashing, brave, and it shames him to know how transparent he must be in his longing. Maybe this is the reminder he needed to keep his egotism in check. No, he really should make it clear to his team that this isn't, can't, be in the cards for him.

But —he touches the button again— that can probably wait until tomorrow, can't it? Dustin slips the box under his bed.

marin this literally made me tear up from laughter

the best part is imagining Dustin's face as he uncovers each item and absurd sentence of pirate backstory left for him

im going to write an unnecessarily detailed snapshot (as i do) thats just dustin being like "i........ this........... noah.............. THIS............ i?........"
