Dustin & Lucy

Dustin takes the hint.

It's a short walk from the gym to the pool —just a couple of doors— and it only takes them a minute or two to get there. The lights are off when they arrive, but it's not pitch-black — the soft, half-darkness of the moon and lamps outside managing to make some headway through the glass. He reaches for the switch, flicking one on.

There's a low, electrical hum as a strip of overhead lights power up. The pool filter makes a sloshing sound. Otherwise, it's really very quiet.

To be honest, Dustin isn't certain they're "allowed" to be here right now, but the thought doesn't trouble him. It's probably fine. And these aren't the kinds of rules he worries about.

"I guess this means we've been murdered," Dustin says, in reference to this year's prom theme. Not that this disappearance was remotely so mysterious. He picks up an errant pool buoy and tosses it one of the ubiquitous open equipment boxes where it belongs.
