Prom is winding down, and Pansy finds herself sitting at a table on the outskirts of the party, affixing her new pin to the lapel of her suit. It's been a really nice night. She might not have won Prom Queen, but she's the distinguished Murder Queen of Finchwood Academy. And honestly, she tells herself, this is better. She'd much rather win a competition of skill than a popularity contest. Plus, she was nominated for Prom Queen. So, she's still well-liked. Not many people can say they're well-liked and expert killers. Well, maybe sociopaths. Aren't they supposed to be kind of charming?

A cheer from the dance floor mercifully pulls her attention. But watching people celebrate brings its own unpleasant thoughts. This snapshot looks so normal. Which, at this school, makes it feel wildly abnormal.
