Mason is reminded of the scene in Bambi where he tries to walk on ice, and goes skittering around. Hamsi isn't the only one who visualizes Mason getting crushed, though he's less cheerful about the prospect.

Though his own legs wobble underneath him like a baby deer as he pulls himself to his feet, Mason does manage to right himself without falling again. "We did it!" he announces gleefully, throwing his arms around Hamsi for a celebratory hug. He's totally willing to ignore the fact that, actually, they haven't accomplished anything at all by ending up in the same situation they started in as long as she is.
